About the SAG

Who are we?

The Astronomical Society of Geneva (SAG) is a member of the Swiss Astronomical Society (SAS), and the Union Romande Companies Astronomy (URSA). And we have many contacts with various companies astronomy in Switzerland, with which we are actively working. We have excellent contacts with theGeneva Observatory at Sauverny, where some members are working as professional astronomers.

What do we do?

We meet every Wednesday evening from 19: 30 to our local area and throughout the school year (there are no sessions during the holidays).
According to the seasons, we offer one to three times per month is:
• a lecture given by a member or by a professional astronomer
• a theme party which is to watch a documentary on the theme of astronomy, followed by an exchange between members of the SAG,
• a night of observing at the telescope.
The Astronomical Society of Geneva also hosts presentations that are designed to introduce the beginner to the fabulous world of astronomy. The SAG aims to provide activities for both beginners and amateur astronomers warned.
The local we have a large library with many books. One to two times per year new books are purchased. The SAG is subscribed to several magazines and periodicals of astronomy.

The SAG has an Internet site on which the news of our company is communicated as well as the schedule of our activities.

Events quarterly

The SAG organizes each year the following events :
• The general assembly in march or April,
• The output interclub at our observatory in June,
• The output of the vernal equinox in the month of September,
• The molten rock climbing in the month of December.

Events scheduled

Each quarter, the SAG organizes jointly with the Museum of History of Science, located in the Pearl of the Lake, an evening of lectures on astronomy and the scientific instruments. These conferences are free and open to the general public.
If the weather allows, an observation in the company of members of the SAG can be organized in the park of the Museum so that the public can discover the sky.

Telescopes

The SAG is equipped with several instruments :
• A telescope of 400 mm,
• A telescope of 250 mm,
• A telescope of 120 mm,
• A bezel of 110 mm,
• A special viewer to observe the sun.

Astronomical phenomena

Each year we organize evenings observations at large astronomical events: eclipses, the night of the shooting stars, comets, etc

Travel

In the light of events, the SAG can organize trips to observatories for its members.
